Dr. Aakanksha Malhotra
M.B.B.S, M.D, D.N.B

Senior Consultant, Pediatrics

Dr Aakansha brings specialised training in psychiatry, addiction medicine, and psychosexual health at East Delhi Medical Centre. Patients from Shahdara, Krishna Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Mansarovar Park and the surrounding East Delhi neighbourhoods visit her for everything from everyday stress and sleeplessness to more serious conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Dr. Malhotra completed her MD in Psychiatry from the Institute of Psychiatry, Centre of Excellence in Mental Health, Kolkata — one of India's oldest and most respected psychiatric institutions. She holds a DNB in Psychiatry from the National Board of Examinations and a Fellowship in Psychosexual Medicine from JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysuru, giving her focused expertise in an area many general psychiatrists don't specialise in.

Before joining East Delhi Medical Centre, she gained hands-on clinical experience as a Senior Resident at some of the country's leading mental health institutions, including the Institute of Psychiatry Kolkata, IHBAS Delhi, and AIIMS Delhi. This exposure to a high volume of complex and varied cases has shaped a treatment style that is thorough, evidence-based, and attentive to the person behind the diagnosis — not just the symptoms on paper.

At EDMC, Dr. Malhotra sees patients across age groups — from teenagers dealing with anxiety or academic stress, to working adults managing depression and burnout, to elderly patients and their families seeking help with memory issues, irritability, or behavioural changes that come with age. She is a member of the Indian Psychiatric Society, the Delhi Psychiatric Society, and the International Association of Sexual Medicine Practitioners, and continues to stay engaged with current research and clinical practice in her field.

Depression Treatment in Shahdara & East Delhi

Persistent sadness, loss of interest in daily activities, low energy, and disturbed sleep are among the most common concerns brought to our psychiatry OPD. Dr. Malhotra offers a combination of medication management and counselling for depression, tailored to the patient’s age, family situation, and severity of symptoms — helping residents of East Delhi, Krishna Nagar, and nearby areas access reliable psychiatric care close to home instead of travelling across the city.

Anxiety, Stress & Panic Attacks

Excessive worry, restlessness, racing heartbeat, and difficulty concentrating are frequently mistaken for physical illness before being correctly identified as anxiety. Dr. Malhotra evaluates and treats generalised anxiety, panic disorder, and stress-related conditions with a practical approach that combines medication where needed with coping strategies patients can use at home and at work.

Sleep Problems & Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking at night, and non-restorative sleep affect people of all ages, but are especially common among older adults and those under work or family stress. Dr. Malhotra assesses the underlying cause of sleep disturbance — whether it’s anxiety, depression, lifestyle habits, or an unrelated medical issue — and builds a treatment plan around it rather than simply prescribing sleeping pills.

Memory, Confusion & Behavioural Changes in Elderly Patients

Families in East Delhi and Dilshad Garden often bring elderly parents or grandparents to us when they notice forgetfulness, irritability, disturbed sleep, or unusual behaviour that goes beyond normal ageing. Dr. Malhotra evaluates these behavioural and psychological changes, works alongside our other specialists when a neurological cause is suspected, and helps families understand what support the patient needs at home.

De-Addiction & Substance Abuse Treatment

Alcohol dependence, tobacco addiction, and misuse of prescription or other substances are treated with a structured, non-judgmental approach at East Delhi Medical Centre. Dr. Malhotra works with patients and their families together, since recovery from addiction is rarely successful without support at home — an approach well suited to close-knit communities across East Delhi and Shahdara.

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) Treatment

Repetitive, intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours — such as excessive checking, cleaning, or counting rituals — can quietly disrupt a person’s daily life and relationships for years before they seek help. Dr. Malhotra diagnoses and treats OCD using a combination of medication and therapy, and is often the first psychiatrist patients from Krishna Nagar and Mansarovar Park see after long delays in recognising the condition.

Bipolar Disorder & Mood Swings

Extreme shifts between periods of high energy or irritability and periods of low mood and withdrawal can be difficult for families to understand and manage. Dr. Malhotra provides long-term management of bipolar disorder, including medication adjustment and family counselling, so relatives know how to support the patient through both phases of the illness.

Schizophrenia & Psychotic Disorders

Hearing voices, unusual beliefs, social withdrawal, and disorganised thinking are signs of psychotic disorders that require timely psychiatric intervention. Dr. Malhotra manages schizophrenia and related conditions with ongoing medication supervision and family guidance, helping patients from across East Delhi stabilise and return to daily functioning.

Marital & Psychosexual Counselling

Sexual health concerns and difficulties within a marriage are often left untreated for years due to hesitation and stigma, particularly in older or more conservative families. As one of the few psychiatrists in the region with a formal Fellowship in Psychosexual Medicine, Dr. Malhotra offers private, respectful, and medically sound consultations for individuals and couples dealing with these concerns — a service that is difficult to find within East Delhi and Shahdara.

Teenage & Adolescent Mental Health

Academic pressure, mood changes, excessive screen use, and behavioural difficulties in teenagers are a growing concern for parents. Dr. Malhotra’s background in child and adolescent psychiatry allows her to assess these concerns carefully and guide parents on how to support their child, without immediately resorting to labels or medication.
